'The Sound of Music Live!' Tonight

i've listened to the cd. i watched 'the making of'. i loved julie andrews in the film. and i am here to say that carrie underwood does an exceptionally admirable job. audra mcdonald sings 'climb every mountain' better than anyone ever has. she is exceptional. she always is! stephen moyer ('true blood') has a surprising good 'light' baritone. laura benanti and christian borle, two broadway vets and tony winners sing the sophisticted 'no way to stop it' and 'how can love survive with panache. ms benanti has a beautiful beautiful voice and ain't to bad to look at either. the von trapp kids are just too damn good. i'm jealous.

Marion Cotillard on Kate Winslet as Adele in “Labor Day”

'variety' has interviewed a number of actors to comment on their pier's performances in 2013. it was nice to see and read one of my favorites comment on another of my faves, so here is the divine and brilliant marion on the equally divine and brilliant kate.

"Kate, I love you. The first time I saw you was in “Heavenly Creatures.” I knew then that I would follow you forever. I felt so deeply connected because that's what you do.
You connect us in the deepest way to all these women you portray. You embody them, personify them, and there is nothing ever self-conscious about it. And with such simplicity! Watching you in “Labor Day,” I felt scared, excited and touched deeply. I felt despair, fear, joy … and then ultimately love. Because that's what you were going through and you made me feel it. What I feel when I watch you onscreen is that you enter into people and you move them. So thank you for the emotion, for the connection and for the love."

'Before Midnight' on Blu Ray and DVD

one of 2013's best films is now on disc. i love this film. i suggest, as i have in the past, that you watch 'before sunrise' and 'before sunset' first. it's an amazing trilogy of love from first bloom thru 18 years of longing and having that love. i really really can't recommend this enough.

'The Good Wife' Is in Fire!

after a bit of a slump at the beginning of season 4 that started to recover in the latter half of the season 'the good wife' has come back swinging and regains the title of the best drama on tv 2013.

the law firm is blown to bits, relationships are in turmoil and alicia is at the top of her game. the first five episodes of season 5 have been remarkable. it should resurface at the emmy's next time around. as should juliaana margulies the best actress currently on a drama series.
and josh charles has never been better than in this episode 5 where spit-fire dialogue bounced off the walls while on it's competition over at showtime the only thing bouncing off the walls (still) was the bi-polar lead actress.

'Gravity' ****stars and All The Stars That Are in the Galaxy It Inhabits

it's all been said over and over. 'gravity' is one of the best of the year. it's the best 3d has ever offered. sandra bullock has never been better.  george clooney is the charmer of all charmers. director alfonso cuaron has created a masterpiece.

it jumps to the top of my 2013 best film list. sandra gets my vote for best actress as of today. i actually love saying that.
there are more films and performances to come. this is merely oscarbation edging at this point. but it's hard to see beyond this film right now.
it's a must see in 3d.
run don't walk to 'gravity'.

'The Quarterback' Part 2

naya always gets to me. this was no exception. these tears are real. she felt the pain.

and then the moment that put me in the puddle of my own tears. nothing more to say.

'The Quarterback'

it's taken me a few days to go here. 'glee' honored finn the quarterback on it's cory monteith tribute last thursday night. and yup it left me in a puddle of my own tears. it was a fitting tribute to the character of finn as it blurred the lines of fantasy and reality in cathartic fashion.

the first thing i asked was 'how the hell did lea michele pull this off?' because she is a professional that's how.

the musical tributes were fitting and mostly succeeded. i will say the use of 'rent's seasons of love' has been over used and over abused at times like this. it was moving for sure but it's time to retire this musical moment for a few decades. that said it set the scene from the first moment. when the alumni came on stage the dam burst. but where the hell was dianna agron?

then came amber riley giving her most moving performance ever of 'i'll stand by you'.

one of the best performances was 'no surrender' which mark salling tore apart and me along with it.

it does not end there. there was one of tv's most moving moments when finn's mom and step dad and kurt were packing up his belongings. and i was on the second box of tissues.

the real floodgates opened with the amazing performances of naya rivera, and the unstoppable lea michele.

(to be continued)

'Blue Jasmine' **stars

i'm not going to waste a lot of time here. although there is a lot of oscar buzz around this woody allen film i just don't get it.
cate blanchett has best actress buzz around her for playing one of the most despicable characters in decades. she is way over the top from beginning to end. forget about it. one of the worst of the year. enough said.

'Prisoners' ****

'prisoners' is a damn good film. jake gyllenhaal and hugh jackman are at the top of their game. it's one of the best thrillers i've seen in years. it's tough, suspenseful and gritty. it's not for the squeamish or faint of heart. child abductions never make for easy viewing. this is not the exception.
kudos to director denis villeneuve for keeping me on the edge of my seat for 153 minutes. and for making me not dislike maria bello and melissa leo as much as i usually do.
i have a feeling it may get lost in the oscar madness even though it is one of the best reviewed films of the year. it is certainly in my top 10 as of this date.
