Emmy Awards Tonight

as much as i love a lot of tv the emmys don't grab me as say the oscars do. even though the oscars draw a lot of dreck they tend to pick 'most' of the best. most! not all.

the emmys tend to get monotonous mostly due to repetition. 'mad men ' again? really? yes really. i'm not into most tv comedies to me they died with seinfeld, raymond, friends and the golden ladies.

but tv drama still gets me. i think most tv dramas are written better than big screen films. but the emmys also tend to ignore the real 'best of'. i mean 'once upon a time' and 'good wife' are ignored for best drama but those damn mad men keeps getting the nod. i still can't figure out who the hell nominates and eventually vote the winners. who is this committee?

well anyway the category that i think is the tightest and best this year is for actress in a leading role drama. it appears claire danes will win it. she is certainly worthy. i'd love michelle dockery to be the surprise winer. she is flawless in 'downton abbey'. ans a repeat win by julianna maggulies would be always welcome. i'd have voted for dockery. sublime. yes i repeat sublime. but hell i did not get a vote.

enjoy them for what they are tonight. i do like the glamour of it all.

Emmy Nomination Talk

so let's start off by saying ''uma thurmam what the frack". she was awful in 'smash'. the worst. she sucked as she generally does. and yet she gets a guest nomination over carrie preston in 'the good wife'. shame shame shame.

now that i got that off my chest i'll move on. it was not an otherwise bad call except for the major networks who received not a single nom for best drama series. the only hopeful, 'the good wife', was shut out shamefully. cable dominated. but that is not to say the networks did not have worthy fare like 'the good wife', 'once upon a time' and 'revenge'.

'madmen' and 'american horror story' reigned supreme with the most noms followed by 'downton abbey'. i am thrilled with all the acting nods given to 'downton' especially michelle dockery. but there was not a single throw away in their acting noms so bravo to them all. but where is dan crawley?

the best actress drama category is the most competitive. michelle, julianna magulies and claire danes with kathy bates along for the ride. they are all deserving. i love julianna but she won last year. i want michelle to win. claire will get it.

drama series is a damn good list too. i want 'downton' but my second choice 'homeland' has the edge. we'll see. i am so over 'madmen'. i just don't get the fawning. enough already. 'breaking bad' may be worthy but i gave up on it. enough of the cooking meth already. and don't get me started  on the gratuitous violence. it was once brilliant. it is now formular. don't send hate mail. i don't read it.

josh charles ignored for 'the good wife'? yes he was. i am thrilled for jason ritter, jean smart, jessica lange, sarah paulson and connie britton. all worthy this year. most years actually.
but alas there was no love for 'renvenge' or 'once upon a time'.
 but uma thurman? really???

if they are pictured above i am thrilled they got a nod. they can't all win but their contributions this year are undeniable and as we see respected.

Michelle and Julianna: Well Done VF

glad to see michelle dockery making this vanity fair tv issue. she does belong in the same class as julianna margulies. whether danes or vergara belong with them is a whole other question.

claire danes has shown a better side on 'homeland'. so maybe. but sofia vergara? give me a break.

''Downton Abbey'' Brilliant!

So what was it that drew the largest audience PBS has seen in years to ''Downton Abbey''? Well let's just say EXCELLENCE. It really is that simple. Excellent production, writing, direction, musical scoring and acting. Julian Fellowes conceived and wrote the best thing television has seen in years and has treated us to two seasons thus far. And lucky for us both of these seasons are available on DVD and Blu Ray. Season three will bow in January 2013 here in America and I'm not quite sure how I can wait that long.

The first two seasons covered the years of 1912 through the end of World War 1. It was a crucial time for British Aristocracy as it was unexpectedly turned upside down. As written by Mr. Fellowes we see the tides turn from inside Downton Abbey the home of the Earl and Countess of Grantham and their three daughters the Ladies Crawley. It is the through the eyes and actions of the Ladies Mary, Edith and Sybil that we see the world change for the landed gentry as well as the ''common folk'' who attended their needs. It was not an easy time for Earl and the Countess Crawley or the Dowager Countess Grantham. As portrayed by Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern and the Grande Dame of them all Maggie Smith we see their small and insular world change about them. And as their lives change ''upstairs'' the world of their ''downstairs'' employees no longer stands still in service as their lives and visions also expand.

As happens in most periods of history change begins with the younger generations. Such is the case at Downton. Lady Sybil the youngest daughter is the first to let the winds of change sweep her up as she looks toward modernity for herself, for her servants and for all women. She is a precursor to the suffragette wonderfully portrayed by Jessica Brown Findlay. Lady Edith as portrayed by Laura Carmichael stands to be the daughter who may hold up the old guard. Last but by no means least is Lady Mary Crawley the eldest daughter on whose shoulders the Grantham Estate rests. Good thing she has broad shoulders. As portrayed by a dazzling Michelle Dockery we may rest assured that the Estate will survive and thrive. Ms. Dockery is a wonder whose mix of talent and beauty bequile episode by episode. She is most complimented by Dan Stevens as third cousin Matthew Crawley heir apparent to Grantham.

The cast is large and there is not a weak link in the mix. Most notable amongst the downstairs staff are Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Joanne Froggatt, Elsie Hughes.

The aforementioned Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McCovern shine as the Earl and Countess Crawley But it is the always wonderful Maggie Smith who damn near steals every scene she is in tossing one liners in her own irresistible style. She remains an international treasure.

Season three begins January 2013. Your have the rest of this year to catch up with the goings on at Downton Abbey. I will go out on a limb and say these two seasons are better than any film released in 2011. I add EXCEPTIONAL as well as excellence to define this piece which by no coincidence is shown on Masterpiece Theater. A masterpiece it is.

'Downton Abbey' Available Now

i am not quite finished with 'downton abbey' here. i just want you to know seasons 1 and 2 are available for rental or purchase on dvd and blu ray. there is a reason this series is giving bps stations there highest ratings. these two seasons add up to better viewing than any of the oscar films of 2011. i know that's kind of dogmatic. well it is! and it's the truth.

i will give my review in the next day or so. if you expect anything less than glowing you'd be wrong.

Michelle Dockery of 'Downton Abbey'

michelle charms on dave letterman

downton's michelle joins the ranks of my fave brit actresses: maggie, judi, julie, keira and kate. as they did it took but seconds for me to respond to that certain something that makes me want more and then more still. talent plus a look, their own special look, combine and create something unstoppable. ms dockery is marvelous. don't believe me? well then do not take my word for it. rent 'downton abbey'.
