The Worst Films of 2010 in Film: Let the Arguements Begin

for me the worst of the year are films that aspired to be the best. or at least damn good. they are films that starred or were directed by known talents or new talents. they all have one thing in common...they are awful. an awful waste of time.

i will grant that three of these have wound up on some 'best of 2010' lists and have even won some critic's awards. well we are all entitled to our own opinion. these ten films, (tomorrow i'll give the absolute worst) represent my opinion. and for the record i am right!.

so is alphabetical order #2 thru #10 are:

a major waste of talent. good cops, bad cops, corrupt cops. it's been done too many times before. simply put it is awful.

what a bitch! break up via snail mail with a guy in iraq. great move. amanda seyfried's character was the most despicable on screen this year. and that's pretty amazing considering the amoral hateful characters in the much better 'the social network'. only channing tatum survives this piece of garbage.

bore bore bore. this slot was going to be held by the deadly dull 'cairo time'. it was a toss up. 'eat pray love' won. or lost depending on your perspective.

some think it's great. it's getting respect from some critic groups. i think it's crap. i'm sorry i do. i think polanski is brilliant. a faux tale trying to excuse tony blair's complicity with the never ending iraq war. this film seemed as never ending. who cares? and who the hell thought kim cattrall could actually be taken seriously in a dramatic role? her zombie like performance made a bad film worse.

the kids are not all right. the two mothers are not alright. they all turn out to be miserable human beings who wind up manipulating the emotions of a biological father, sperm donor,  minding his own business until they come along again. mark ruffalo is the only redeeming character in this film getting the shaft from a self centered dysfunctional family. all families are dysfunctional. this group takes it to new and slimier heights.

simply put it's a mess. jake get someone to read scripts for you. between this and 'love and other drugs' you are killing your career.

the newest installment of ugly americans abroad. it killed a franchise that was already on life support after the first film. and enough of kim cattral already.

an all star mess as most all star movies are.

stereotypes in the most boring film of the year. the critics love it. or think they should to prove they are not elitists. if you are addicted to sleeping pills and want to break the habit watch this every night instead. but it may be coma producing.

tomorrow: the worst film of 2010.

'Eat Pray Love' or 'Kvetch Kvetch Kvetch' Rates *star

it took me awhile to catch up with this one and i still did not wait long enough. bore bore bore. this movie started and proceeded to nowhere but took 2hours and 20 minutes to get there. julia roberts is ever charming and generally accessible on film but not this time. her performance is as removed and remote. she even made eating in rome look boring and dull. that in itself s a major fete but not the presumed desired end result. skip it. go out for a good italian meal as the one in this film is rancid.

Oscarbation: '127 Hours' Is One of the Years Best

another film that will make my best of 2010. james franco is amazing. danny boyle directs this brilliant film. the grand canyon has never looked better. it's still in theaters so catch it on the big screen where the cinematography really needs to be seen.

'Carol of the Bells'

Remembering Ava on Her Birthdate

i loved ava gardner. she was earthy. and she was a beauty. was she a great actress? probably not. but she had a screen presence that better actresses did not. she does have some memorable roles. and she has one absolutely brilliant performance. as maxine faulk in 'the night of the iguana' she stood her ground with two of the screen's finest deborah kerr and richard burton. in fact given the showier role her performance came off as the film's best. not getting an oscar nom in 1964 for this role when mary poppins and molly brown did is an ultimate oscar insult. well that being said we lost ava too soon. but she lived...damn did she live!!!

if you only see one ava film in your life make it tennessee williams 'the night of the iquana'. it is quite remarkable as directed by john houston. the cast is stellar all around. treat yourself to a classic.

'The Town' Releases Today on Blu Ray and DVD

the golden globes decided to ignore 'the town' except for a nod to jeremy renner in the supporting male category. you should not ignore it. when i first saw it i wondered if it would catch on. many film critic organizations got it right and it made more ten best lists than i thought it might. this is a nice surprise. it also appears to be getting rewarded in the ensemble acting category where that distinction applies. the credit for this goes to ben allleck. there is not a weak acting moment in this film.

mr. affleck also gave rebecca hall and blake lively their best roles to date. especially ms. lively. for those of you who only know her as serena on 'gossip girl', where she is actually wonderful, you ain't seen nothing yet. as the meth addicted krista she shines. and it seems that only the san diego film critics and i noticed. blake gives one of the best supporting performances of 2010. is it because of 'gossip girl' that she can't really be taken that seriously. have we forgotten that two time oscar winner sally field appeared in 'gidget' and 'the flying nun' before major film roles?

you owe it to yourself to see this film. this is just a reminder. i'll bet the farm it makes one of the ten nominations come oscar time. i'll bet the same farm the oscars ignore blake lively. they've made bigger mistakes in the past but don't get me started.

'THE TOWN' IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS OF 2010

Filmography 2010: 270 Films in 6 Minutes

Song of the Day: 'Elusive Buttertfly''

'elusive butterfly' had a haunting quality about it when bob lind released it in  1966. it's been covered by any number of artists each one adding to it well. it's one of those standards that will remain popular for years to come. simply put it is a 'beautiful' song where melody and lyric are perfectly joined together.

petula clark added her own 'naturalness' to it with her cover. pet always had the ability to make her cover stand on it's own alongside the original if not rising above it. in this case her cover surpassed the original by miles.

the nicest surprise came a decade ago when jane olivor covered it. her voice and the arrangement recaptured the 'haunting' feeling it had seemingly lost over the years. thank you jane. she made the butterfly elusive again.

'Social Network' Appears to be the Juggernaut to Beat

based on the critics picks anyhow. but will the majority of oscar voters pick a well written, directed, edited and acted film about some of the most despicable people EVER for best picture. they might; i hope they might not. it will make my best of 2010 but not THE best of 2010. spending two hours with this group was almost as bad as being a guest when 'rachel getting married' got married. i said almost!

but hell i'm the guy who still can't figure out 'the hurt locker' over 'avatar', 'up in the air', 'precious' and 'the blind side' last year.

'Cairo Time' *1/2stars

i love small films that give us an unexpected love that will be all to brief. i could not wait to see this 2010 film. and i love patricia clarkson who is totally underrated and under utilized in film. this film and her performance is not going to help her out much.

the director for some odd reason has her walking in slo-mo for the entire film. it's almost as though she just finished a guest star role on amc's 'the walking dead' and didn't get out of character. her lines are delivered, and i use that word deliberately, no matter the emotion with a one notemonotone. it's as if ms. clarkson filmed this entire movie stoned. what the hell was the director thinking?

the only saving grace in this film is the performance of egyptian actor alexander siddig. i can't figure out how he could even react to the wooden ms. clarkson.

forget this one.

Kyra Closing Shop

kyra sedgwick has decided to make the next season the final season of 'the closer'. after 7 seasons i'm really going to hate saying goodbye to brenda lee johnson. i suppose kyra's decision is too have the hit tnt series go out while it's still on top of it's game. all the same i'm going to miss one of the best ensmble casts on tv.

My Favorite Films of the Year

with a few films yet to see it's time to look back at some of my favorite films of 2010. are they the best films of 2010? well they are as far as i'm concerned. will they get oscar noms? not all of them but so what. they are films that in one way or another moved me, touched my spirit, made me laugh or cry or taught me something about real life, possible life or made up life. they all made me think. i would revisit all of them again and in some cases i already have and one of them more than twice revisited. they are the movies i've recommended over the past eleven months and still recommend. i am not a critic in the strict sense of the word although i am quite critical. i'm an opinionist. and i am damn opinionated. at some point after the new year i'll opinionate on my top films of the year. and the worst. and there were so many worst this year as there is every other year. but my worst are those that had the pretense to believe they could/would be the best.

a best:

'shutter island'

the first major film of the year starred the ever growing leonardo dicaprio. martin scorcese directed it and it was a whole new ballgame for him. i think it's his best film. i mean even he seemed to have had enough of gangsters and crooked cops. i'm glad he did. this is a masterpiece of storytelling. it opened in february so the short term memory of the oscar voters may forget it. they shouldn't.

besides the brilliant performance by dicaprio there is the wonderful michelle williams, mark rufalo in the first of two worthy roles this year ('the kids are alright') and the should be nominated as actress in a supporting role the always terrific patricia clarkson.

simply put it's a story of madness. it's a mystery. i know it's a good mystery because i did not figure it out. therefore it went above and beyond the formular most films follow. not since 'the sixth sense' has a hollywood mystery caught me this much off guard.

i gave it ***stars when it came out. i should up it to ***1/2 stars as no other mystery surpassed it this year.
'shutter island' is available on dvd and blu ray.

i hope hollywood surprises me and gives this film it's due with noms come february. i just won't bet the house on it!

Debra Winger

one of the true pleasures of this mostly mediocre tv season is the  return of debra winger. debra plays frances a no longer younger actress on the hbo series 'in treatment'. i really hate that debra walked away from film all those years ago but i do respect her decesion. she appears every now and then on film and tv and i am always 'there'. i even suffered thru the god-awful 'rachel getting married' a few years ago. took me a bit of time to forgive debra for that one.

check her out on 'in treatment'. her beauty and talent have not faded but are aging with perfection.
