What I'm Watching

the scorecard continues

'scandal'
the fastest freshest show on network tv. in it's sophmore season it holds up to it's much too abbreviated freshman run. the cast is terrific. the writing is crisp. and it's lead kerri washington is just great. and she wears clothes better than anyone on tv currently. sorry julianna. if you are not watching thhis show you are missing a high velocity drama.
obviously renewed.
season 2: A+

'the following'
kevin bacon heads the cast of this serial killer drama. he, natalie zea and the rest of the cast keeps us spellbound week after week as it tosses and turns through our minds. gruesome? who cares. it's that damn good.
it's been renewed.
season 1: A

'bates motel'

norma and norma. god help us all and anyone who visits this hotel. i won't check in but i am damn sure going to keep watching.
vera farmiga, i love this actress, and freddie highmore shine as the creepiest mother and son on tv. i'm loving it.
thankfully it's been renewed
season 1: b+

From the Soundtrack of My Life: 'Hideaway'

i love this song. to date it is the last thing barbra has done music and/or otherwise that i've enjoyed. this being recorded in 2005.
and i like a gazzillion other gay men was her greatest fan.
not so much anymore.
but i truly love this barry gibb piece and her voice was oh so wonderful on it. soft, velvety, perfection.
and her phrasing, flawless, putting all others to shame.

TV: What I'm Watching

'chicago fire'
i resisted this freshman show and why i'm not sure. so i binged on the first 8 episodes and am hooked. it one of the best ensemble casts on tv currently. the combination of the work and personnel lives of the characters intertwine quite well. it has been renewed for a sophomore season. it deserves it.
grade: B+

'arrow'
'arrow' is fun. it's not generally my cup of tea but the strong performance by stephen amell keeps me coming back. not to mention his body which is the best on tv currently. the guy is hot. although the flashbacks to his island 'captivity' tend to get boring the present day story lines are tight and gripping. i hope they lessen those flashbacks next season as yes it has been renewed. katie cassidy is delightful as his 'love' interest.
grade:B

'beauty and the beast'
there is something utterly charming about the leads kristen kreuk and jay ryan that this show keeps drawing me back. they actually make you believe in them and root for them. it's good. try it and see their chemistry for yourself.
it has not yet been renewed but i'm going to keep hoping.
grade: B+

R.I.P Annette

i knew this day was coming. yet it's still sad news. annette was the most famous of the original mousekeeters on 'the mickey mouse club'. she went on to star with frankie avalon in a series of beach movies. paul anka wrote an album full of songs for her 'annette sings anka'. for a lot of men of a certain age their first crush has now passed on.

annette actually had a #1 billboard song 'taul paul' in 1959. her minor success in this led to a string of young teenage stars recording stars some one hit wonders and others more successfully.

annette on 'american bandstand' 1959.

in 1960 she recorded 'o dio mio' when walt disney gave her a three episode arc on the tv series 'zorro.

Broadway Baby: Still Crushing on Aaron Tveit

i've had a crush on aaron since 'next to normal' dirty old man that i am.
'les miserables' sealed the deal.
watching this interview i am still crushing. he's a charmer.
up next is the tv series 'graceland' due in may. more on that to come.

TV: What I've Been Watching

'the americans'
i really like this show. it's adult, intelligent and complicated. it's already been deservedly  renewed for a second season. it's a 'cold war' drama and it captures the time and it's fears realistically. give it a shot. the show often has subtitles as some of the principals speak russian which lends to it's authenticity. keri russel and matthew rhys topline and are damn good. and may i add that any show that signs on susan misner gets my vote. she is one of the best underutilized actresses around. it has been renewed for a sophomore season.
 grade: A+
susan misner

'house of cards'
the best show that is not on tv. as of now it is only available on nteflix streaming. it would be worth to subscribe to the service just to see this original series. it hooked me in episode 1 and watched the entire season in two marathon viewings. kevin spacey and robin wright head a terrific cast. you can't go wrong with this series about political high jinks in washington .
it has been renewed for a second season.
grade: A

season 1 also featured the amazing corey stoll who gave us the brilliant portrayal of ernest hemingway in 'midnight in paris. he's amazing.

(it appears it will now be available on dvd in june)

Josh Doyle: 'The Meaning of Life'

from the soundtrack of my life
i just discovered josh doyle. he sang this on 'the road to rogue' promoting the new series 'rogue' on directv. i love this song and his voice. i'll be checking out the series this weekend. i happen to like it's star thandie newton since i first saw her real talent in 'crash'.

here's a vocal only version. better sound quality.

'Smash': 'I Heard Your Voice in a Dream'

from the soundtrack of my life

one of the few musical highlights this season unexpectedly comes from the episode 'bells and whistles' sung by jeremy jordon.

'The Big Wedding' Opens April 26th

might be fun. will katherine heigl ruin it? she has not proven herself on the big screen yet to me.  if so can sayfried, deniro and sarandon save it?

Genie Francis

genie francis is back on 'general hospital'. finally. each time ms francis was written off the show it lost something. perhaps it's heart. we were teased with 'special appearances' every now and then. one of those appearances actually, finally, won her an emmy award. from what i hear she is now back on contract and hopefully for a long long time. welcome home genie.

'Hello Dolly' Releases Today on BluRay

'A New Argentina' and 'Buenos Aires'

Is There Finally a Pope for the New Millenium?

urbi et orbi

a mere 13 years old this century is. and yet none too soon the papal state may have found a papa closer to the teachings of the man called jesus than ever before most especially the last man who held this title. for he presents himself as merely a man. this is a good thing. as a jew, like jesus, i possibly can see this man in the jesus image. his humility. his grace. his spirit. no conversion here i assure you but i can see this man as i saw ghandi. that is a good man, a man of peace. we can only hope he can truly take up the sins of his church and renew the spirit  of the prophet jesus.

Happy Birthday Shirley a Film Musical Legend and Oscar Winner

i haven't done a lot of birthdays lately but c'mon it's shirley jones. oscar winner for 'elmer gantry' ms jones charmed as laurie williams and julie jordon 'oklahoma' and 'carousel' respectively.

from 'oklahoma'

'many a new day'

'out of my dreams'

'o-k-l-a-h-o-m-a' medley

from 'carousel'

'if i loved you'

shirley won her well deserved oscar for 'elmer gantry' playing against type to the shock of musical fans everywhere.

shirley also played marian paroo in one of my least favorite translations from stage to screen in 'the music man'.

'marion the librarian'

'till there was you'

as musical films began to fade shirley took to the small screen in the silly 'the partridge family'.

happy birthday shirley

Monca Potter

with the network tv season winding down i just want to say monica potter on 'parenthood' gave one of this year's best performances. she definitely gave the bravest performance as kristina braverman. faced with cancer she set her pacing well with all it's ups (not many) and downs (plenty). through many a horrific scene she kept us stareing at the screen both saddened and horrified. if she does not get an emmy nom if not the emmy itself, there is no justice.

'New Rules'

'real time' is a repeat tonight. so here's last week's 'new rules'.  the pope parts were funny and true.

It's Time

'Les Miserables' Revisited ****stars

when i first reviewed 'lez miz' i gave it***1/2stars. not too shabby. but after rewatching it this past weekend i am giving it back the 1/2* it had not gotten. i'll use the excuse that i was not fully recovered from my surgery when i saw it in the theater. uncomfortability can be an influence.

first i knocked russel crowe's singing. yes it is still not that good but damn it it fits the role. i mean would josh groban's voice have worked for the character javert? no! as i see crowe play the role his voice or lack of works perfectly.

second i believed anne hathaway was being applauded for one song. i was wrong. her performance throughout her 18 minutes or so on screen was magnificent. no i did not have a lobotomy. on the second and third view she stll amazed me.

i originally wrote it was a brilliant piece of film. i still say this. however, i add it is a masterpiece of musical film. i always believed 'fiddler on the roof' was the best translation from stage to film. it has moved to second place.

and oh amanda seyfried....she made me smile and cry on my second viewing. she is wonderful and the unsung piece of this film this past award season. it's not often i am more amazed the second time i see a film. generally i am less impressed or just feel the same as the first time. not so with 'lez miz'.

and hugh jackman. in another year he would have won the oscar for best actor. but there was mr. lincoln. but today i wonder if mr. jackman was not the best actor this year. just thinking out loud. you must decide for yourself.

aaron tveit and eddie redmayne and samantha barks remain wonderful.
sasha baron cohen and helena bonham cater were both great comic relief in an other wise tragedy.

bravo tom hooper.

and here is the lovely unsung amanda seyfried with eddie redmayne
