Spring TV Season in Review Part 2: 'Dallas' and 'The Newsroom'

what a surprise. i thought 'dallas' would be rehashed trash. i'd give it a shot or two and remove from my dvr. i could not wait for aaron sorkin's 'the newsroom' after all he gave us 'the west wing'. well after a few episodes each 'dallas' stays on my dvr and 'the newsroom is history.
'the newsroom' is just plain awful. deadly dull. a series that relies on old news stories to tell it's story. what the frack happened to aaron sorkin? he made politics relevant in 'the west wing' but makes them old hat in this new series. jeff daniels and sam waterston try hard in poorly written scripts. but...it is emily mortimer and allison pill who really kill this show. two wacko female characters who can't act their way out of this mess. they suck! really they do.

i give this series an F and hope it is buried soon to put us out of our misery. oh no wait it has been renewed already oy.

on the other hand...i thought 'dallas' would be same old same old. a rehash of a hit that became painful in it's final days/seasons. WRONG! it lives. the next generation of ewings carry on a grand tradition of scheming and revenge. and jr ewing, bobby and sue ellen are all there to help them out with their less than stellar machinations. just one question. what the hell is up with larry hangman's eyebrows? another... how does linda gray stay so fabulous looking. i love her sue ellen and am thrilled she is back with a vengeance.

'dallas' gets a B+ which ain't to shabby.

Spring TV Season in Review Part 1: 'The Borgias'

i really liked season 1 of 'the borgias'. i loved season 2. it goes deep into the machinations of the sly pope alexander and his family no matter how fanciful it may be. jeremey irons shines, as usual, as the corrupt pope. however, truly shining this season is holliday granger as the headstrong lucrezia borgia. she is eye candy no more. francois arnaud as cesare, david oakes as juan and colm wore as cardinal rover also shine.

i highly recommend this series. season 1 is available for purchase or rental. season 2 has no release date yet. i assure you it will be released prior to season 3 which sadly will not air until 2013. so start catching up. you will not be sorry.

i'm going with an A+ rating

Peter O’Toole Announces Retirement From Acting: “The Heart Has Gone Out Of Me”

i've never really known of an actor who publicly retired from his craft. generally they just stop. mostly because good roles stopped being offered. well peter o'toole has always been unique.

in his own words
Dear All
It is time for me to chuck in the sponge. To retire from films and stage. The heart for it has gone out of me: it won’t come back.

My professional acting life, stage and screen, has brought me public support, emotional fulfillment and material comfort. It has brought me together with fine people, good companions with whom I’ve shared the inevitable lot of all actors: flops and hits.

However, it’s my belief that one should decide for oneself when it is time to end one’s stay. So I bid the profession a dry-eyed and profoundly grateful farewell.

Ever
Peter O’Toole

my best recommendation is
'the lion in winter' which remains my favorite peter o'toole fim as well as my favorite katharine hepburn film. it ranks as my #1 film of all time.

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ 13-Minute Featurette

'The Dark Knight Rises' Hans Zimmer's Complete Soundtrack

'Love Never Dies' on DVD and Bluray

what a mess. garbage. andrew lloyd webber' sequel to 'phantom of the opera' bombed in london and failed to make it to broadway. for some odd reason it was decided to film the stage version from the australia company. it boggles the mind. it is just plain awful and an embarrassment. i love, unashamedly, love musicals. not this one. forget about it.
rent or by the helluva lot better original 'phantom of the opera' film. it was under rated and wrongly maligned.

'all i ask of you' from the film of phantom with patrick wilson and emmy rossum

Idiot of the Week

i copied this from a fellow blogger 'bill in exile'. i could not have said it any better.

“I believe that if you understood who I truly am in my heart, and if it were possible to fully communicate what I believe is in the real, enduring best interest of African American families, you would vote for me for president.”

Mitt Romney addressing the NAACP just moments ago this morning.

WOW! Just f***ing WOW!

Sooooo lemme see if I’ve got this right — a white guy who grew up the son of wealth and privilege, who was once a bishop of the Mormon church {a church that excluded blacks until the late 70s} who is currently estimated to be worth more than a quarter billion dollars — most of which is kept in secret Swiss or Cayman Island bank accounts, and whose father was the governor of Michigan and a presidential candidate – knows what the average African-American family needs and what’s in their best interest.

This guy either has brass balls the size of Texas or he’s the stupidest motherf-er on the face of the Earth.

Given is past performances over the years — I vote for the latter.

The Amazing Spiderman' ***1/2stars

'the amazing spiderman' actually amazes. the 3d is great. the action is almost nonstop. the cast works, but it is andrew garfield as peter parker who along with the special effects makes the admission price more than worth it. he is a charmer to be sure. he was the best thing about 'the social network' and fulfilled the promise in 'never let me go'. he may be the best of his generation right now. he is so damn charismatic! emma stone was 'good' as gwen stacey but seems a bit 'old' for garfield. whereas mr. garfield did not make me miss tobey maquire the although lovely and talented ms stone made me long for kirsten dunst. andrew and kirsten would have worked better and fit better together. but that is a minor gripe.

sally field and martin sheen were the perfect aunt may and uncle ben.
denis leary and rhys ifans supported the whole well.

the story takes us back to the moments peter parker found out hoe he became spidey and why he did' it's a good ride. get the popcorn and soda and enjoy. it even calls for a return visit. see it in 3d. it works for this movie.
