Happy Birthday Kate

Rejoice Rejoice for on this date in 1975 a new star burst forth that would  shine with beauty and brilliance and she would be called Kate

Well I'm rejoicing. I first came to Kate by way of 'Sense and Sensibility' in 1995. I was impressed. So in 1996 when 'Jude' was released I went to see it. I am becoming more impressed. Also in 1996 I went to see 'Hamlet' because it was a sort of Julie Christie comeback. And there was Kate playing 'Ophelia' and I know longer needed more impressions. I knew then and there that Kate would be an actress to be reckoned with.

Then comes 1997 and the titanic 'Titanic'. The STAR was born. From that moment on Kate would rise to the heights of super stardom. But Kate would also amaze. Being offered a lot of major Hollywood movies Kate opted to do smaller independent films. This is how she really learned the craft. Kate became an actress not a "movie star". Thank god.

She had five Oscar noms with no win. I could quibble with three of them. I can really accept one: that being Jennifer Connelly in 2001. Kate in 'Iris' lost to Jennifer's 'A Dangerous Mind' and even I say that was correct. The lose to Helen Hunt in 1997 was a sham. Truth be told Julie Christie and Judy Dench also should have won over Hunt that year.

The real robberey was in 2004. Kate lost for 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. WHAT? And to Hillary Skank, typo intended, for 'Million Dollar Baby'. Ridiculous, Absurd, Embarrassment. MADDENING!. Hillary snuck in with the rest of the Clint Eastwood's film awards. Highway Robbery.

I do have things to say about her 2006 lose for 'Little Children' but I'll deal with that another time.

But Finally At Last Kate won the Oscar for 'The Reader'. Just desserts justly served.

Happy Birthday Kate. Thanks for acting. Thanks for the choices. Thanks for the Work.

revisiting two videos i made awhile ago on her birthday

Song of the Day: 'Whistling Away the Dark' from 'Darling Lili'

written by henry mancini for the film 'darling lili' the under appreciated julie andrews and rock hudson 1970 vehicle. julie's performance was also underestimated and under appreciated at the time of it's release. perhaps it still is.

Happy Birthday Julie

some of my favorite julie films over the years. though i must admit the thought of watching 'mary poppins' ever again makes me gag!

For the Homophopes

'Song of the Day': "Unexpected Song"

'unexpected song' by lloyd webber from "song and dance". this song has a bucketfull of memories for me. his hebrew name was meir but more commonly called mathew. he will always be meir to me and this song will always be 'our' song.

here's idina menzel in lieu of bernadette peters. i could not take ms. peters two days in a row. once a year is actually more than enough.

'Brothers and Sisters' Season Premiere Comes Back With a Vengence: A+

i thought the senator was dead. all summer i thought he was dead. he wasn't dead. he was kept in a vegetative comma by his republican wife. gotta love those republicans. they believe if you feed them they will rejuvenate and grow. not so. so kitty after she is offered the job to run the rnc changes her mind. now she can play god. damn those republicans are good!

but in the meantime...
justin portrayed by the amazing david annable comes home from war again but this time intact mentally and physically. he will get the floundering walker family back from the fog ans malaise and the depression they have fallen into. but first he must get the out of character silent and passive nora back. he gets her back. and together they get the rest of the walkers back to their normal everyday wine drinking argumentative selves. thank you justin.

the night truly beloned to sally field and david annable. the rest all shined but not quite as bright. and hopefully the dreadful balthzar getty is finally gone for good.

i thought this show might be on it's last legs. alas i was and am happily proved wrong. welcome back. better than ever i raise a glass to all of you.

Happy Birthday Sophia

Song of the Day: 'Pearl's a Singer'

'pearl's a singer'

i'm really not crazy about bernadette peters but i like the song. it's different. from another time and place. i hope you enjoy it.

'The Town' ***1/2stars

like most i wondered if ben affleck's first directorial effort, 'burn baby burn', was a one time fluke. well we need wonder no more. with 'the town' he is proving himself to be a director to be reckoned with. and he gets everything out of his cast that they have to give with no holds barred. 'the town' is a damn good film.

it has oscar noms wriiten all over it at the moment. there are three months to go.

and he directs himself better than anyone else has. unlike streisand who can give herself no direction, ben keeps his own performance in check. and who the hell is rebecca hall? keep this woman working. she goes to the head of my class. and damn blake lively breaks out as a strung out single mom leaving her rather glamorous image way in the dust. give her a supporting nom now!

run now to see this film...yes film. it soars way above 'movie'. it's almost a work of art. keep on directing ben. you're a natural.

Song of the Day: 'Cherish'

'cherish' by david cassidy

i unashamedly admit i love petula clark and 'cherish' her gift of music she has shared with us as a singer and song writer

'Glee'less Returns: D

'glee' returned this week to start it's second season. except for a few momemts, very few, it was dreadful. enough of the rachel angst...grow up girl. the songs were dreadful except for 'what i did for love' which was totally out of line with rachel's storyline. what she did was not for love except possibly her own self love.

Song of the Day: 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'

'the lion sleeps tonight' was recorded by the nylons a black group in the 50's. but as happened a lot at that time it was the cover by a white group. the tokens, that got the radio airplay and became the standard.

the nylons

Oscarbation: The King’s Speech Wins Big at Toronto

oscarbation 2010-2011 has officially begun

Happy Birthday Sophia

Song of the Day: 'You Can't Hurry Love'

'you can't hurry love' is a classic. a motown classic that has expanded well beyond it's origins. it's always been a favorite of mine and seems to constantly roll around in that music depot in my brain. i just love this song in all it's incarnations enjoy.

phil collins with 'you can't hurry love'

combined with 'two hearts'

and from 'runaway bride' and the dixie chicks

and alison krauss live

and of course the supreme original*

*i believe phil collins holds the best of 'you can't hurry love' title

'Spartacus' Star Bows Out Due to Cancer Recurrence

for andy personally the following is sad news. for us not quite as sad but it's a shame that one of the most innovative series of the past season is now gone. but most importantly we wish mr. whitfield well and much luck in his battle with cancer.

'Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield is bowing out of the second season of the hit Starz show because his cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, has returned and requires aggressive treatment. "It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved," Whitfield, 36, said in a statement. "It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far." The future of the series -- season 2 had tentatively been set to air next September -- is uncertain. Starz still plans to premiere the series' prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, this January.'

Song of the Day: Abba Remixed'

Rally to Restore Sanity

with all the madhatter type tea parties going on this year i think it quite possible jon stewart may be the one to rally us all back to sanity before the inmates take control of the congressional asylum. we need to take this seriously friends.

Song of the Day: "Hurricane"

dylan is a genius musically and lyrically. i know his vocals can put some people off lol. but he was one of the master musicians of the last century...may he continue to reign supreme.

dylan's 'hurricane' is a masterpiece combining music, lyrics and social enlightment in a single brilliant work of art.

What's on My Mind Today: Oy Another Wasila Type Idiot on the Rise

this nut bag right winger won the republican primary in delaware on tuesday. well the republican candidate lost really. this wacko was the tea party pick and those nutty baggers came out in force to win her the nomination. why? because the right wing nut jobs are fired up.

well is this what we want taking over congress and the country? so all you democrats sit on your asses and stay apathetic this election cycle and the wack jobs win. but if you don't want this and other moralistic crazies taking over the washington asylum you best get 'fired up and ready to go' as we did in 2008.

it's our call really. oh and one other thing this douche head was endorsed by the douche diva IT from wasila. is this what you want? well i don't. we need to get off our collective asses and make a difference as we did in 2008. for the record i love teabagging but fear these tea baggers more than i fear the mythical image of a satan.

here is the made in the image of IT when she appeared on the bill maher's 'politically incorrect' way back when bfore he was fired for telling the truth after 9/11.

and here she is on sexuality. she takes on all sex but is hell bent on ridding the world of masturbation the most natural of acts. i'd almost enjoy watching her try and pull this one off. pun intended. what a frackin' idiot!

the mind boggles

Remembering Dorothy Loudon on Her Birthdate

the great dorothy loudon died too too soon. she was magic on the broadway stage. the dimming of her light on the great white way could and would never be replaced. thanks for the laughs and all the joy.

'fifty percent'

her hilarious 'vodka'

she was the epitome of a 'broadway baby'

from her tony winning role as mrs. hannigan in 'annie': 'easy street'

and two from 'sweeny todd': 'by the sea' and 'the worst pies in london'

Song(s) of the Day from Birthday Girl Lauren Bacall

lauren won the tony award as best actress in a musical for 'applause' and 'woman of the year' and deservedly so. lauren represents what a living legend really is and means. to her friends she is betty bacall. so happiest of birthdays betty. and keep on keeping on.

'woman of the year'

'the grass is always greener' with the hysterically funny and dearly departed marilyn cooper

the 'woman of the year' herself

and not only did she deserve a tony for playing margo channing but all the 'applause' that went with it

'but alive'

this scene and song won her the tony. this clip from the tv adaptation does not give justice to the live performance. but i'll take what i can get.

'welcome to the theater'

and when lauren as margo tells you to 'fasten your seat belts' you had best listen!

Happy Birthday Lauren

'Dancing with Whom'?

since when is a woman known only for being her idiot mother's daughter and an unwed mother herself a star? she should be dancing with her entire family in an internment camp for right wing unjudeo-christian american born constitutional terrorists. dancing with a star my ass!

Christian de la Fuente joins 'Private Practice'

hot off 'in plain sight' christian joins 'private practice' this season. just making a guss here but he probably is the new guy kate walsh sluts out with....i mean damn her character has done 'it' with every guy on the show except the now departed dell.

Bill Bill Maher Talks Glenn Beck's 'Diabetic Mall-Walkers,' Summer Of Racism

'real time' returns friday on hbo. finally sane critical thought returns.

Happy Birthday Mom

happy birthday mom and thanks

Song of the Day: 'Spread a Little Sunshine' from "Pippin''

a mother's song for her son in 'pippin'. this was not exactly my mom but hell it is was someone's mother.

i love the musical 'pippin. it was the broadway show that introduced me to both jill clayburgh and then betty buckley, her replacement, as catherine the role of pippin's love interest.  the original starred john rubinstien in the title role but william katt admirably replaced him in this video adaptation.

it remains in my top 10 broadway shows of all time.

here is chita rivera in the role of pippin's stepmother fastrada.
