'Far From The Madding Crowd'

Warner Brothers finally released this Julie Christie film a spectacle of exploding passions.
The luminous Julie is reunited with director John Schlesinger and screenplay writer Frederic Raphael of 'Darling' fame.
Her costars are Terence Stamp, Alan Bates and Peter Finch. That's a menage to die for.
Now if only they'd release 'The Go-Between' a much better film that is truly a classic.

'Rachel Getting Married': THE WORST MOVIE OF 2008!!!

This film for all it's critical acclaim is a one huge BORE!
Don't ask. Most importantly don't go. Don't bother when it's released on DVD or shows up on cable.

Ann Hathaway for Best Actress??? DUH!
I don't get it. Nor will most of you.

THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT THIS FILM IS THAT IT BROUGHT DEBRA WINGER BACK ONCE MORE. HOWEVER, I MUST ADMIT DEBRA HAS A PRETTY SMALL AND MOSTLY THANKLESS ROLE.

'The Reader'

WOW!!!
Intense, Direct, Bold.
BRILLIANT!!!!!!

This is not just another Holocaust film. This is the after story. The oft forgotten after story. Just one story behind the stories we already know. We know they were there. We know they knew. We now know someone(s) had the guts to cut through the gloss. Gest to the vein and slices it open. No ovens. Just the heartache, grief, guilt and disgust of their having been ovens in the first place. The heartache of the unsuspected and unsuspecting.

The surprise here is David Gross an unknown german actor in the lead as the young Michael Berg. He is a phenomenon. This young actor has a depth and breathe seen in someone his first time out. He damn well had better have been playing opposite Kate Winslet and portraying the younger version of Ralph Fiennes character. A revelation to say the least. I can only hope film sees more of him in the future.

I refuse to give much of the plot on any film. Suffice it to say an illicit affair turns to something bigger than one of the participants could imagine.

And now about Kate Winslet. She again proves how great an actress she is. She just keeps getting better. I wonder how this is possible. Yet there she is on screen in her best role to date. (i have yet to see 'revolutionary road') A former nazi guard living years later in Berlin. And years later in....no I won't... Go see for yourself. Where does she get the will to delve into every character she portrays so deeply? How does she keep the integrity of each character so honest? No matter what the reason, treason, goodness or crime? How the hell does she do it? Besides being a genuinely genuine actress i don't know. I'm just damn glad she goes the extra miles to do it.

The only problem I have is Hollywood is pushing her for a supporting actress for this role. Kate is the star here. It is an insult to her and a snub for a deserving supporting actress. Nobody wants Kate to win an Oscar more than I do except maybe for Kate herself. This however is not the way to do it. This is what happens when greedy stupid pruducers and studio heads collide.

That being said go see this adult, intelligent, mature, brilliantly written, directed and acted film.

And and it was great to see Lena Olin back on film in a small, supporting actress deserving, role.

Kate's 'Heavenly Creatures'

1994. Kate Winslet's first feature film. You know what many critics said? I paraphrase: talented sure but will only ever get to play the girl next door. Too chunky you know. Could never be a leading lady. Kate was determined to prove them wrong. I guess five Oscar noms later she has. Brava Kate!

See this if you are a Kate fan. It can be a tough watch but for her ability.

Summary via IMBD

'Heavenly Creatures' is not your average film; it's done with a technique that is not common in the business, and therefore has been both criticised and praised. The technique is used by not just filming a story and it's actions, but by actually showing the side of the girls' vivid imaginations. This was done through the elaborate sequences of the girls' fantasies. This way of filming shows how the pair justified the crime they commit, a vital part of the story. The plot itself does not trail far from the true story, except for the fact of inferred lesbianism between the two girls. (Something the real-life Juliet Hulme has vehemently denied) So it's anyone's guess as to whether or not which possibility is the truth.

Visually, this movie is stunning. The landscape of Christchurch and the surrounding area is beautiful, and adds a sense of authenticity to the film. The voice overs are extracts from the real Pauline's diary, and explain very well what exactly is going on inside of her head. All in all, a very good portrayal by all of the actors (obviously on the part of Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet) and the music is exquisite.

'Titanic' is Ten

The Stars: Kate and Leo

The Lovers

The Film

Ten is the most difficult because right below it are films that may have at one time been in my Top Ten.
So after much hair pulling and nail biting I went with the one I truly believe belongs there.
C'mon a big ship, an iceberg, a love affair, meddling parents, aristocracy and those at one time considered second class. Hey did I mention the iceberg?. The necklace, the jilted mean boyfriend? That painting? Did I mention the love affair? Kate and Leo aka Rose and Jack who could have been better. The great Kathy Bates as Molly Brown. The cinematography, the screenplay, the directionthe special effects, the music. Did I mention that theme song. Hey it worked. It's just that it was played out foreverrrrrrrrrr. Did I mention Kate and Leo? Did I mention this is number ten? Why the hell after all of this isn't it number? Got me!
