Natalie '63: 'Love With the Proper Stranger'

The Oscar nominees were Shirley McClaine (Irma La Duce), Leslie Caron (The L-Shaped Room), Rachel Roberts (This Sporting Life), Natalie and Patricia Neal for a truly supporting twenty-five minute performance for 'Hud'. The supporting role won. What were they thinking? Well they were thinking Natalie is always good and as usual they could take her for granted. This was Natalie's year in an important film that showed the need for a woman's right to choose. It also was a quirky love story where Nat and Steve McQueen shined. It was probably his finest role also.
Unfortunately, it would also be her final chance for the prize. She was out and out cheated. The Oscars had gotten it wrong before and certainly would again. But in 1963 they were truly wrong...wrong, wrong, wrong!!!

Gypsy 1962

Then came Gypsy. Natalie did her own singing. Thank God. This role was kind of biographical as she, Natalie advances from child to Woman as dad Louise. She was the BEST Gypsy ever with apologies to Laura Benati who is currently great in the role on Broadway. But heck, no one is Natalie Wood who was born to play this role.
