From the Soundtrack of My Life: 'At the Ballet' Redux

yesterday i posted 'at the ballet' from 'glee'. today i give you audra mcdonald, kelli o'hara and megan hilty with their interpretation of this brilliant marvin hamlisch piece from 'a chorus line'.
i have not always been kind to ms hilty but she blows this one out of the park. kelli charms as always. audra as always is the goddess.

'Rectify'

are you in withdrawal since some of your favorite series have had their season finales? or anguishing as they are about to? well head on over to the sundance channel and start watching 'rectify'. it's a serious look at 'life after prison' when new evidence shows up and all the characters have to deal with this one way or another. it's not pretty. that's simplistic but trust me this is tv at it's best.

aden young, abigail spencer and adelaide clemens shine in this well cast drama.
so far this mini series rates an A.

A Very Special 'Glee' Moment: 'At the Ballet'

when 'glee' gets it right, which is often, it gets it so right. i've often sung, pun intended, the praise of naya rivera. well here i go again. now that musicals are back in 'vogue' perhaps it is time to remake 'a chorus line' to erase that abortion that was filmed in 1985 by director richard attenborough who had not a single clue how to make a musical.
and yes naya would make the perfect sheila. she has enough warmth and the talent to make this bitter, frustrated, sarcastic and yet funny and so talented character come to life.

my tribute revisited

'The Company You Keep' **stars

i hate to say it but i must: this julie christie, robert redford vehicle is a damn bore. sorry jules. it goes nowhere much to slowly. it got lost between political thriller and docudrama and never found it's true way. what could have been an intelligent film has been embalmed.
i am left wondering howerver, what a christie/redford film might have been once upon a time. this is not it. wait for cable or whatever.

A Smashing 'That's Life' from the Soundtrack of My Life

perhaps 'smash' would have fared better had they given katharine mcphee and megan hilty more duets. 'that's life' is an arguement for this. away from the constraints of the suffocating 'bombshell' the combination of karen and ivy is a let it go, let loose, knock it out of the park, kick it in the ass dynamic duo. the long suffering series needed more moments like this.

'Dallas' Renewed for a Third Season

there was concern after larry hagman passed. but the powers that be saw fit to renew the series. good move. it does work even though jr is gone.

It's May the Lusty Month of May

from the soundtrack of my life

From the Soundtrack of My Life: John Barrowman's 'Unusual Way'

i'm often asked to name my favorite pieces from the musical theater. it's a tough call because so many touch me. each piece generally holds something special and takes me to a memory. some happy so very very happy. some take me to a sadder place...perhaps even a darker place. but they nonetheless get to me each time i hear them.
some will always outshine the others always. 'being alive', 'on my own', 'what i did for love' 'storybook', 'somewhere', 'children will isten'' and 'far from the home i love' come to mind automatically.
and among these there is 'unusual way' from 'nine'. this is a happy memory, a better time, a great time. it was broadway 1982. i was mad for this tony winning musical. i still am. it ranks among my 'best'. the actress was shelly burch as claudia nardi. she got me and didn't let go. laura benati made it her own in the 2003 revival.

recently i was happy to hear john barrowman sing it. what i love about john is his daring. his 'i am what i am' attitude toward his career and musical choices. he also happens to be a really nice man. i first met him after a performance of 'sunset boulevard' in london. i then had the pleasure of sharing 'an american songbook' evening with him in new york. he was/is the most down to earth guy on the planet.

well anyway i digress....so here i share his brilliant 'unusual way' in a live version and a prerecorded version. i love the song and the man.

and just for the heck of it...ms laura benanti

Integrity

i congratulate and thank jason collins for coming out. now there is a role model in the professional leagues. will the day ever come, i think it may, when we stop having to say 'the first'? the first gay, the first black, the first latino/latina? the new day is dawning moves forward.

some of the best of 'one life to live'

and one of daytimes best actresses gets back to work. kassie depaiva has been the heart of the show for quite a few years now as blair cramer. i hope they keep her as one of the show's central characters.
